Michelle Rodriguez said she'll quit Fast & Furious if it doesn't 'show love' to female cast members

She means business.

MICHELLE RODRIGUEZ SPOKE out in May about how it’s a wonder that the Fast & Furious series passed the Bechdel test. For those who are unaware, the Bechdel test is an uncomplicated way of measuring female representation in movies.

To pass, a movie needs to meet the following three criteria:

  1. It must have at least two women in it.
  2. The two women must talk to each other.
  3. The conversation must be about something other than a man.

If you haven’t noticed how little effort films put into making two women have a conversation about something other than a man, here are a few titles that failed: The Entire Lord of the Rings trilogy, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II, Avatar, the Star Wars trilogy and The Little Mermaid.  You can check how other films did here.

So basically, Michelle Rodriguez is pretty annoyed at the lack of female interaction in the series.

Despite working with Charlize Theron, Helen Mirren and Gal Gadot, Rodriguez was aware that more female characters does not mean more female dialogue. She told Entertainment Weekly:

I’ve been making movies with Jordana [Brewster], who plays the sister of Dom Toretto, for 16 years and I can count on one hand how many lines I’ve had to her [...] I think that’s pathetic and it’s a lack of creativity.”

Yesterday she took to Instagram to show just how serious she was about getting realistic representation of women in the series.

She said:

I hope they decide to show some love to the women of the franchise on the next one. Or I just might have to say goodbye to a loved franchise. It’s been a good ride & I’m grateful for the opportunity the fans & studio have provided over the years.
Michelle had previously hoped that the series would grow out of its “90s macho vibe”, but due to it’s popularity in China where the majority of the market are male, it seems unlikely. She feels aware of a personal responsibility for sending out the right message to women.

Rodriguez almost walked out of the first movie of the franchise because she didn’t agree with a story line that had her involved in a love triangle because she didn’t ethically agree with what was being asked of her.
She believed her character had a more significant role to play than a girl that two men fought over. Vin Diesel agreed with her and the script was reworked.
